The Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI) is a grassroots nonprofit organization located in the San Francisoc Bay Area whose mission is to strengthen the women’s sports community by mobilizing female athletes to inspire and lead through service. BAWSI was founded in 2005 by Olympic and World Cup soccer stars Brandi Chastain and Julie Foudy, along with Marlene Bjornsrud, former general manager of the San Jose CyberRays women’s professional soccer team. BAWSI engages, equips and encourages female athletes to serve the greater good through meaningful and transformative work in underserved communities.

In just six years, BAWSI (www.bawsi.org) has provided a platform for hundreds of collegiate and high school female athletes and coaches to serve as strong, athletic role models in the lives of more than 12,000 children and women through our signature fitness and confidence-building programs. Through the experience of service, BAWSI encourages the inner development of the female athlete, increasing her awareness of her capacity to serve others and the world more effectively within and outside of the sports community.
